Recommended Nutrition Books and Cookbooks

Nutrition Books

There have been a number of good nutrition-related books and cookbooks published during the past few months.  I will mention a few that I have personally read and recommend.   For more recommended books, see this page on my website.

Food: What the Heck Should I Eat This book by Dr. Mark Hyman is a well-referenced overview of each food category including chapters on meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit, fats, grains, beans, nuts, sweeteners and beverages.  This book also includes his suggested dietary template and a small number of recipes.  For a great overview of whole foods eating, I recommend this book.

You Can Fix Your Brain I received my certified Gluten Practitioner from  Dr. Tom O’Bryan, the author of this new book.  If you have any interest in brain health for yourself or a loved one, I highly recommend checking out this book.

Real Food KetoFor those interested in learning more about the high fat low carbohydrate ketogenic diet, I highly recommend this book.  It is by Jimmy Moore and his wife, Christine, who is a certified nutrition therapist.  This book emphasizes using whole foods, not packaged ones, which is what I also recommend.  It also gives a great overview of vitamins and minerals, how digestion works, hormones, blood sugar and detoxification.  There are also about 50 recipes.  This is a beautiful book and would be excellent if you are interested in learning more about nutrition basics.

The Big Book of Gluten Free Cooking Many recipes for gluten-free baked goods do not taste nearly as good as their gluten-filled counterparts. That is not the case with the recipes in Gigi Stewart’s new book. I made the banana bread with chocolate chips for my family and all of them loved it and they would not have known it was gluten-free had I not told them. These recipes are excellent and not complicated. This book is a must for everyone who has celiac disease or other wise eats gluten-free for life.

The Quick and Healthy Keto Zone Cookbook would be a great book for someone who wants to eat a ketogenic diet and needs a cookbook filled with the basics.  Each recipe includes macronutrients so that it will be easy to track your carbohydrates should you want to.  There is not any information about the details of the diet, so if you need an overview, then other books would be better than this one.
